At the centre of the Newcomen Group are its two founders, John Bunyard and Tim Routledge, who routinely undertake an initial investigation into any business challenge before involving other Newcomen personnel. In this way, they are able to ensure that any project commences with the right commercial orientation and the most appropriate introduction of personnel. Although their Heuristic skills largely overlap, there is a nominal division of responsibility between Science (incorporating theory, strategy and research) on John's part and Technology - embracing visualisation, execution, and productions - on Tim's.
Members of the Newcomen Group are appointed on the basis of a number of pre-set criteria, foremost among which are the requirements to excel in their field, to embrace the Group's philosophical and scientific principles and, importantly, to be fun to work with. All are expected to be great thinkers or doers or preferably, like Thomas Newcomen himself, both. Additionally, all are self-starters. The group tends to work virtually - for both logistical and environmental reasons - so the versatility to operate alone, in a group or by remote technology is second nature.
